Makeup Course Week 3

This week we start the decades, kicking off with the 1920's and oh my word this was hard!

Think Louise Brooks & Clara Bow, vampy looking pale skin, sad eyebrows and pouty lips, both were silent movie stars and icons of the 20's

Louise Brooks

Clara Bow

20's makeup was heavy duty, full coverage with black smoky eyes and lips ranging from wine red to plum to black and blush very high up upon the cheekbone, the reason the makeup was so bold and heavy was due to the introduction of silent movies, the makeup had to be bold to show up on film. Women in the 20's would shave off their eyebrows and paint on thin expressive brows, most popular was the sad eyebrows, this was again down to the silent movie era which used makeup to express emotions without the use of words this was their best medium.

I really did not imagine the amount of work to go in to a look like this would be so vast! As women of this era do not shave their brows we had to start by blocking out brows, this might sound easy to you but it really is a long and insanely draining process, it takes an immense amount of concentration and to get the brows symmetrically was a bloody nightmare, everyone struggled!

This is not a look that I can imagine wearing out but it was super dramatic and actually stunning, we all looked like mental patients half way through and china dolls by the end of it!

I think I'm going to find myself falling in love with doing makeup of the eras, its just so interesting as you get a history lesson along with it too!

I forgot to take a pic of how I looked after I had my makeup done but if I can get a pic from my partner in crime for the day I will post it for you all to see!

  1. Ahh I hadnt even thought of that actually, make up must have had to be really expressive then in those silent movies! I dont think I'd like to try and block out my eyebrows, its got to be hard especially to make them look alright! x

  2. So hard to do, takes a lot of not very nice products to flatten the brows down including wax...it was a real challenge but finally feel like I am really learning something different

  3. I love 20a looks. I've blocked my eyebrows before (and actually shaved them off in my teens) and it really is so hard to get them even! Lately i've taken to bleaching them, that way i have a guide but can change it a bit if i want :P

  4. I love the 20s looks too! I bet it was a bit tricky, I've watched a few YT vids and they make it look so easy. I got in a right state with some Pritt stick a few weeks back, still didn't cover my brows though! lol xxx
